That means you can't use any inverter higher than 3800 watts without getting a main panel upgrade or a "line side tap". Line side tap solar diagram. Line-side tap connection: This method requires that the wires from the inverter are connected to the service wires on the line side of the circuit breaker. This connection is very rarely allowed for residential systems but is increasingly common in commercial systems. SUPPLY (OR LINE) SIDE CONNECTION INTERCONNECTION REQUIREMENTS EXCERPT Rev. 09/27/19 A Supply Side Connection (SSC), also referred to as a Line Side Tap constitutes a new service as defined by the National Electric Code (NEC), and is subject to all applicable NEC requirements and/or requirements adopted by the Authority Having Jurisdiction. 7.5 Is the Manufacturer's approval for load side tap or UL (or other NRTL) field evaluation performed? 7.6 For solar ready panels, is the appropriate tap model used in accordance with the panel manufacturer? 7.7 For solar ready panels, is the PV Source breaker sized according to the manufacturer's specifications? Re: Backfed breaker or Line side tap? I see one disadvantage of the line side tap and that is now I need to add overcurrent protection on the line between the inverter and the grid to protect the conductors between the PV meter and the inverter from potential overcurrent caused by a short on the AC side of the inverter.

NEC Article 690.64(A) allows a Line‐Side AC connection to busbars, conductors, or lugs at any point between the customer's side of the utility meter, and the service disconnect. Many folks call this a "line‐side tap", which leads to confusion with the "10‐foot tap rule" and Article 240.21(B). Note: this wiring diagram is simply an example. Diagrams may vary. I'm going to be installing solar while at the same time making some changes to the service at my home to power a new detached shop. My plan is to upgrade my 200a service to 400a. The house already has a 200a panel and the shop will get a new 200a panel. My thought was to put a new load center between the house and the meter/load center combo, as a place to connect the solar inverters, as well as a fut... December 2014 #7. Re: Line Side Tap Wiring Question. solar_dave wrote: ». 1) The utility company will need to allow a back-feed electrical via your 40 amp breaker. In your diagram you have a tap. But, by the way, if you just add a backfed breaker to a panelboard on the load side of the service disconnecting means, then it is a load side connection, but it is probably not a tap. Our online solar software allows you to generate a single-line diagram of your residential PV design, along with a cover page, site plan, placards, attachment plan, attachment detail, fire safety plan, code-validated electrical calculations, and equipment data sheets. The LST2 diagram on the last page provides a partial detail of the tap connection. The position of the junction box will vary depending on the panel configuration and if the service is from overhead or underground to the meter. Line Side Tap 3 (LST3) - Line Side Tap connection installed to the bus between the meter and service main breaker.

The line-side tap is technically an extension of the service conductors since there is no overcurrent protection other than that provided in the PV system disconnecting means. In the 2017 NEC, the rules have been reversed. Now, If the PV system is connected to the supply side of the service disconnecting means as permitted in 230.82(6), the PV ...

Have a 200a panel with a 200a breaker and will be adding 14.5kW of solar. My main panel can only accommodate 240a of supply. I can either backfeed panel and reduce the main breaker to 175a, or connect my solar to the meter with a line side tap. 175a is probably adequate, most of my heating is currently gas. Installer is fine using either option, but said line side tap is a little easier. He said I can monitor production/consumption the same way in either case. Any other pros or cons?

Option #3: Line Side Tap. An increasingly common solution is known as a Line Side tap, a.k.a. Supply Side tap. This work is usually done by a licensed electrician. The main breaker box is completely bypassed, and a fused AC Disconnect is used to connect the inverter to the grid between the utility meter and the main breaker box. This removes ...

Line side tap would only be needed if you wanted more than 50A breaker for PV. Or, if you want to feed grid directly into your inverter, and be able to switch the whole house main panel to output of inverter, using it as UPS for the entire house. Simple way to go is what you were thinking. 50A breaker feeds Outback.

An installer said that to me. I have a 200amp breaker and the installer said that if my system is greater than 8kW AC then I need a line side tap. Is this true? I am assuming the installer isn't lying. He did say if I did go above that number then I need a line side tap vs not having one, and adding one is $1500. Does it really cost that much to add that?

For you guys who do a lot of solar, when you tap the service conductors in the service disconnect for your solar disconnect, is that disconnect considered a service disconnect and required to be grouped with the main? I'm getting different answers from different solar installers. Code references would be cool but I know you guys are busy. I would consider it a service disconnect but there could be an exception that I don't know about

That set of busbars is connected directly to the load side of the meter socket before the main disconnect, bypassing the main busbars altogether.

See diagram of current setup and potential 50A CT placement. Hey all, I have 90A Backfeed headed for a 200/200 single phase panel. Seems like a dead ringer for an LST. I'm curious what the cost adders look like, obviously an AC Combiner and a readily accessible disco - but will the utility company whack me $5000 to come on site and shut the service off during install? Line Side Tap. Governing Code(s): NEC 705.12(A), 705.31. A line side tap (or supply side tap) refers to a connection between the meter and main breaker. This is the preferred method of interconnection for solar installers as it is the most straight forward and requires the least amount of calculations.

A supply side tap is a connection that is made to the busbars or conductors on the line or utility side of the main service disconnect. The line side tap the simplest way of interconnection when installing a PV system that exceeds the 120% rule.
