I've been flying for around nine years, sitting at only ~330 hours. I fly for fun and transportation. I really decided to pursue my CPL and CFI to give myself something to train for instead of flying around in circles. I plan to provide instruction to my flying club. **Paperwork** Logbook checking was very light; DPE's attitude is that if I passed my Commercial ride (early this year) I must have meet the requirements then. I have been teaching at a University for 10+ years, so I obtained a let...
CFI SE and CFI-I writeup This week I passed my CFI initial exam for single engine airplanes and two days later I took my CFI-I exam with a different examiner and passed. This was a huge step for me! I’m working on getting my MEI next, and then I am excited to start a career in aviation. Preparing for these exams was a lot of work and I spent a lot of hours studying and stressing. I wanted to make a write up to help anyone else that may be going down this route. \*Full disclosure: the quick t...
TL;DR \- 11 months, 67.3 hours, 5 CFIs, 4 C\-172s I took and Passed my PPL ASEL checkride today. So I've always wanted to be a pilot as long as I can remember, when I was a kid, I would say I want to be a pilot when I grow up. I enlisted in the USAF with the intention of working airplanes, but I got a computer job instead. In 1993 I took my first flight in a Cessna 172, it was supposed to be a sight seeing flight with my girlfriend. I had every intention of starting training but it didn't wor...

CFI and CFII add-on write up BACKSTORY- I am based in Las Vegas but the west coast has a back-up when it comes to getting checkrides- especially a CFI Initial. Finally got a date at KVGT and went to start checkride and the DPE told me I am not qualified because I did not have my CFI sign off the training flights we did. Up until I started CFI everything was 141 and we were using school records for the checkrides so the DPEs never really cared too much about the logbooks. At least he didn't ta...
Well that was a stressful day. Long writeup incoming. TL;DR, I passed the oral and 90% of the flight portion, but had to discontinue due to a loose throttle control in flight. Wanted to put a writeup together before I go back to finish so everything is still fresh: It started with the expected paperwork, he reviewed my written test report and 141 graduation certificate, logbook for the correct experience and endorsements, medical, ID and student pilot certificate, 8710 form on IACRA. I handed ...

Technically, I got my ticket Wednesday morning, but as I'm not typically short on words and still had to work my 9-5, I figured it was best to wait until the weekend to post. I spent many an hour reviewing as much as I could, and up until the day of my ride, I was stressed and bouncing back and forth between feeling confident and like I knew nothing, all at the same time. On top of the baseline checkride jitters, we couldn't process my application through IACRA (misspelling on my name on F...
Sunday morning, I got to KMYF/Executive Airpark around 0737 and my instructor did as well. We went out and preflighted the airplane, loaded my flight plan into the G650 and I got my seat set up and the iPad mount how I wanted it. Also brought my headset and left it in the airplane as well as my knee board. We then met with the examiner in the classroom and exchanged pleasantries. We went through my required documents (med cert, photo id and my pilots license) and went through my electronic logb...

Context: I went from X-Plane → 1/2 of IRL training → RONA → X-Plane so I’m going to write a guide that I was looking for when I first started simming last fall before going to IRL training. I’m writing this as a follow-up to my [hardware post](https://www.reddit.com/r/flightsim/comments/fyq3lk/my_list_of_recommended_hardware_for_an_authentic/) I’m going to assume you have a similar configuration to what I suggested. The REP for example is essential for walking around the plane and practicing tha...
So, in short, here's what I know about circling to land after an instrument approach. * Stay in the protected area. * Left turns unless the plate specifies otherwise. * If you lose sight of the airport while circling, make a climbing turn towards the runway before executing the missed approach procedure. I read the section on this in the Instrument Flying Handbook and unless I missed something that's really all they tell you, along with giving you some diagrams of recommended circling procedur...
Hope this is helpful to someone! Here's a debrief on my failed practical exam -I did not pass the flight portion and have 60 days to retest those maneuvers I did not pass and those which we were not able to get to. **Bottom line**: This was on me and I agree that I unsatisfactorily completed the forward slip to landing and my first landing was unsatisfactory. XXX is definitely a tough examiner and definitely not someone enjoyable to go through an oral with or a practical flight portion wit...
When I'm flying to an airport I usually give them a call to request landing something like 20 miles out (is this too far?), and I have been given a host of different commands, but I'm unsure of how to go about executing all of them them. Could you help give me some direction for these different scenarios? 1. "Enter left downwind..." - Single runway airport was north east of me, they wanted me to land on the runway facing north. In Japan if it matters. Do I fly to the northern top of the run...

I've been practicing my pattern landings and I'm looking for suggestions on some new airports to fly to help keep things interesting. I'd like to find some small-medium-sized regional non-commercial airports that come with default FSX (no addons for now) that have a picture of the flight pattern available if possible, for example from a website, so I can see what the pattern *should* look like as compared to real world landmarks, roads etc. At least, I'd like to find real world GA airports wher...
I thought my latest blog post would be relevant to this group. I've pasted the entire thing here for you to read without leaving Reddit, and the original is available here: [https://draft.dev/learn/writing-guides/how-to-write-better-technical-content](https://draft.dev/learn/writing-guides/how-to-write-better-technical-content) I recently spoke to the CTO Craft community about [building a software engineering team blog](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lez5V41rwTs). Today I passed my checkride and got my PPL! A lot of my preparation involved reading checkride gouges on this sub, so I was definitely gonna do my part to contribute as well! **Written:** I got a 95% on the written. I prepared using the Sporty's study buddy app. The questions on the written were straight off the app. Just put the time in studying and you will pass, guaranteed! I also recommend getting it knocked out as soon as you feel ready, so you can then focus on the Oral and Flight. **Or...
This is what crushing boredom leads to in a hard lockdown. I've been typing since last Monday. If you have written a word down on your precious piece of paper and one of those words is not on this list, you have unfortunately written down the word wrongly. Double check, if you can. abandon ability able about above absent absorb abstract absurd abuse access accident account accuse achieve acid acoustic acquire across act action actor actress actual ...
You might remember this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/brisbane/comments/8480df/over_10_years_ago_i_used_to_be_heavily_into_urban/dvnn03s/ It's going to be happening. We will be performing our flight out of Archerfield Airport on the morning of Saturday 23 June, departing at approximately 0900 (UTC+10). The aircraft type is a Cessna 172S with registration VH-KIT. ***CFI Checkride*** Preparation for Checkride: While studying for my commercial rating, I developed lesson plans practiced teaching every lesson plan to shorten my timeline for cfi. After completing my commercial checkride, I read the Aviation Instructors Handbook twice on the subjects covered in the fundamentals of instruction, read ac 61-65 twice, and taught self-identified weak areas. I spent about 8 hours in the airplane teaching from the right seat to get comfortable with the vantage point...

On July 26, 2021, about 1318 pacific daylight time, a Bombardier Inc., CL-600-2B16 airplane, N605TR, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Truckee-Tahoe Airport (TRK), Truckee, California. The pilot, co-pilot and 4 passengers were fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. According to automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) data and preliminary air traffic control (ATC) audio from the Federal Aviation...
Well I'm slightly disappointed I couldn't do the whole practical test yesterday due to some pretty nasty winds coming through the Midwest this weekend, by the time we were ready to fly winds were 180 at 15 kts gusting 20 kts which exceeded my personal minimums. Flight portion is rescheduled for next Saturday and I passed the Oral so I figured I would write up that portion. I went into the oral with 58 total hours and started my training in May. I flew on average twice a week only on weekends due...
